What is a sofa with storage?
It is a sofa with a built-in storage compartment. Depending on the model, it can be under the chaise longue, under a module or in the arms. You lift the relevant lid or seat to reach it. It holds blankets, cushions and dry bedding; an arm compartment has less room than one under a chaise longue.

Advantages of a sofa with storage
- Extra storage without adding another piece of furniture.
- A tidier room: blankets and cushions stay handy and out of sight.
- Makes use of space in small flats, where every corner counts.
- Can hold small, lightweight toys within the manufacturer’s load limits and instructions. Children should not operate the lid.
Drawbacks to check
- Weight: the frame and mechanism can add weight. Check how the sofa comes apart if you need to move it.
- Access: the lid needs room to open. Depending on the mechanism, a wall, table or cushions may get in the way.
- Capacity: measure the usable space and ask about its load limit. Not every compartment holds a bulky blanket.
- Care: store only dry items and avoid overloading it. Keep the mechanism clear and follow the model instructions.
When is sofa storage worthwhile?
It is worthwhile if storage is limited and you often use blankets, cushions or bedding in the living room. The compartment needs to be big enough and easy to open with your usual furniture arrangement.
A sofa without storage may suit you better if you already have enough storage, will not use the compartment or prefer a configuration without that mechanism. For a sofa that is easy to move, compare the weight and disassembly of specific models.
Storage alone does not determine seat height or firmness. Comfort depends on the sofa’s suspension, filling and design: sit on each model to compare.
What size storage compartment do you need?
Start with what you want to store. Measure the usable internal width, depth and height, allowing for the mechanism; the sofa’s outside measurements are not enough. Check the opening too: an item may fit inside but not through the lid. An arm compartment may be enough for remotes or small items; ask about a larger compartment for bulky bedding.
5 checks before buying
- Measure the opening: check the lid’s movement and access with the wall and table in their usual positions.
- Try the mechanism: it should open and close smoothly, without rubbing or excessive effort.
- Ask how the lid stays open and how closing is controlled. Assisted opening does not always mean soft closing.
- Sit down and compare: assess seat height, firmness and back support as well as storage.
- Inspect inside: check the finish, usable dimensions and load limit; avoid edges that could snag fabrics.

Frequently asked questions about storage sofas
Can you store blankets and pillows?
Yes, provided they are dry, fit without forcing the lid and stay within the load limit. Check the usable space: an arm compartment may be too small for a pillow.
Does storage make a sofa less comfortable?
Not necessarily. Seating comfort depends on the suspension, filling and model design. Try the seat and backrest in the store to find the comfort you prefer.
Do all chaise longues have storage?
No. It depends on the model and configuration. Confirm where the compartment is and its capacity before ordering.
